My name is Olga Kononchuk. I am the founder of Equalway. I am a disabled person, and there have been countless instances when I've urgently needed to use a disabled bathroom, only to find it occupied by someone who does not have a disability. This misuse not only causes inconvenience and distress but also jeopardizes the dignity and respect that should be accorded to those with genuine needs.

In Australia, disabled bathrooms have become susceptible to misuse and vandalism. They are often exploited by individuals who use them as changing rooms, for extended breaks, or even for vandalistic activities. Such misuse creates unnecessary barriers for people like myself and countless others who rely on these facilities for daily comfort and necessary health needs.

Data shows that in many public areas, up to 30% of incidents in disabled bathrooms involve unauthorized use and damages, further straining public resources and diminishing the accessibility for those who need it most. Locking these bathrooms with a universal disability access key system could significantly reduce these incidents by ensuring only those with legitimate needs can access these spaces.

We urge local councils and authorities across Australia to implement this lock system, which has been successfully adopted in other parts of the world, such as the National Key Scheme in the UK. This scheme provides eligible individuals with a key that gives them access to locked public disabled toilets nationwide, ensuring the facilities remain clean and available for those who truly need them.

Together, we can create a more respectful and accessible environment for all disabled individuals across the country. By signing this petition, you contribute to a necessary change that respects the rights and needs of disabled persons, ensuring their independence and dignity can be maintained at all times. Please add your signature to support the installation of locking mechanisms on disabled bathrooms to prevent misuse and safeguard these essential facilities for those in need.
